Synta – Source code viewer for Total Commander

Source code with syntax highlighting in the Total Commander Lister – about 40 languages.

Synta shows source code with syntax highlighting, line numbers and an optional minimap. A switch shows minified or messy code formatted – the file itself is never changed. Languages and color schemes are plain text files that anyone can extend.

What is Synta?

Synta is a Lister plugin for Total Commander. Press F3 on a source file and read it with syntax highlighting for about 40 languages, line numbers, indent guides and an optional minimap. A switch (Ctrl+B) shows JSON, XML, HTML, CSS, SQL and C-like code formatted – the file itself is never changed.

Languages and color schemes are plain text files that anyone can extend, and your additions survive updates. Synta detects UTF-8, UTF-16 and many legacy code pages automatically, colors links in the text and prints in color. It is written in C++ against the plain Win32 API.

Highlights

  • 01

    About 40 languages

From C++ and Python to PowerShell, SQL, Dockerfile and AutoHotkey; files without an extension are recognized by name or shebang.

  • 02

    Show formatted

JSON, XML, HTML, CSS, SQL and C-like languages pretty-printed with Ctrl+B – only white space changes.

  • 03

    Your own languages

Languages and color schemes are plain text files; an update never touches your .user.lang additions.

  • 04

    Many encodings

UTF-8, UTF-16 and legacy code pages are detected automatically and switchable; DOS text with box-drawing characters opens too.

How it’s built

Synta is written in C++ against the plain Win32 API, without frameworks or runtimes: its own lexer driven by language definition files, a formatter for minified code and GDI drawing in the Windows 11 style, with color schemes such as Ayu, GitHub, Solarized, Catppuccin and Gruvbox.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Total Commander Lister show source code with syntax highlighting?

Yes, with Synta: about 40 languages, line numbers, a minimap and a formatted view for minified code.

How do I add a language or a color scheme?

Put a .lang file into the Languages folder or a .theme file into the Themes folder of the plugin. To extend a built-in language, add a <name>.user.lang next to it; updates never touch it.

Does Synta change my files when it formats code?

No. The formatted view only changes how the code is shown; the file on disk stays as it is.
